It turns out our Moon isn\u2019t just a lifeless rock quietly orbiting Earth. Deep beneath its surface, scientists have found evidence of a massive, jelly-like layer slowly moving\u2014its motion driven by the gravitational pull of both Earth and the Sun. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

A lunar tide beneath the surface<\/h2>\n

Researchers from NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center and the University of Arizona have detected a partially molten layer<\/strong> wedged between the Moon\u2019s rocky mantle and its metallic core. The team describes its consistency as similar to sticky jelly, shifting up and down in a rhythm much like ocean tides on Earth<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Just as the Moon\u2019s gravity causes our seas to rise and fall, Earth\u2014and to a lesser degree, the Sun\u2014induces subtle \u201ctidal\u201d movements<\/strong> within the Moon\u2019s interior. According to the study, published in AGU Advances<\/em>, this is the first measurement<\/strong> of the Moon\u2019s annual gravitational variations caused by internal tides.<\/p>\n

How the discovery was made<\/h2>\n

No one drilled into the Moon to find this layer. Instead, scientists analysed data from NASA\u2019s GRAIL<\/strong> (Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory) mission, which mapped the Moon\u2019s gravitational field, and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter<\/strong>, which has been collecting detailed surface and environmental data since 2009.<\/p>\n

Their findings only made sense if a huge, softer zone exists at the base of the mantle\u2014beneath the crust of magnesium silicate and pyroxene. This partially molten region likely plays a role in the Moon\u2019s thermal state<\/strong> and could reveal clues about its early formation.<\/p>\n

Questions scientists still can\u2019t answer<\/h2>\n

The discovery raises more questions than it answers. What is this layer made of exactly? How has it stayed warm enough to remain semi-molten<\/strong> for billions of years? And how does it influence the Moon\u2019s geological evolution<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

For now, those answers remain out of reach. Confirming them would require deep drilling<\/strong>\u2014either by future astronauts or advanced robotic missions capable of returning core samples to Earth.<\/p>\n

A new chapter in lunar science<\/h2>\n

We\u2019ve long believed we understood the Moon\u2019s basic structure, but this finding hints at hidden complexity<\/strong> beneath its surface<\/a><\/strong>. Understanding this molten layer could help scientists refine models of the Moon\u2019s origin<\/strong>, internal dynamics<\/strong>, and even its tectonic behaviour<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As one researcher put it, \u201cWe\u2019ve been looking at the Moon for millennia, but there\u2019s still so much happening beneath our feet\u2014or in this case, beneath the regolith\u2014that we\u2019ve only just begun to uncover.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
