Rare earth breakthrough in Wyoming could shift global tech power balance

A vast deposit of rare earth elements discovered in Wyoming may prove to be one of the most strategically important U.S. mineral finds in decades—reshaping the nation’s position in clean energy, high-tech manufacturing, and national security.

A discovery with global implications

Geologists have confirmed the presence of massive rare earth oxide deposits beneath the Brook Mine near Sheridan, Wyoming. These 17 metallic elements are essential to technologies that define modern life—electric vehicles, wind turbines, smartphones, satellites, and advanced defence systems all depend on them.

Until now, the U.S. has relied heavily on imports, particularly from China, which refines over 85% of the world’s rare earth supply. For many in Washington, this dependence represents a strategic vulnerability. As Dr. Emily Hastings of the U.S. Geological Survey notes, “This is not just a mineral discovery—it’s a geopolitical breakthrough. If developed responsibly, it could reduce U.S. exposure to foreign supply disruptions and cement leadership in green energy and defence.”

From coal mine to critical mineral powerhouse

The story began in 2011 when Randall Atkins, a former J.P. Morgan banker and now CEO of Ramaco Resources, acquired the ageing coal mine for just $2 million. At the time, few imagined it concealed a resource valued at an estimated $37 billion.

Fast forward 12 years, and advanced geological surveys have revealed what may be the most significant unconventional rare earth deposit in the U.S. since 1952. Covering more than 15,800 acres, the site could transform both Ramaco’s business and the country’s mineral independence.

Early results and the road ahead

Initial tests have been highly encouraging, with exploratory drilling reaching depths of up to 700 feet. Ramaco is now working alongside federal researchers to assess the quality and scale of the find. Atkins has made clear that the company’s vision extends beyond mining: “We aim to process and manufacture here in the U.S., ensuring the value chain stays onshore.”

If developed, the mine could feed new processing plants—a critical gap in America’s rare earth infrastructure. Currently, most mined material is still shipped overseas, mainly to China, for refining.

Economic and political momentum

The discovery aligns neatly with U.S. government priorities. In 2022, the Department of Energy launched a $3 billion initiative to strengthen domestic production of battery minerals. Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis has hailed the find as a “historic win” for the state and for U.S. mineral independence, urging adherence to environmental safeguards and the creation of skilled local jobs.

Global demand for rare earths is expected to triple by 2040, driven by renewable energy and electric vehicle growth. This positions Wyoming to become a key player in the race for sustainable, secure supply chains.

Balancing opportunity with responsibility

Environmental experts caution that rare earth mining can generate radioactive waste and other long-term ecological risks. For the Brook Mine to fulfil its promise without repeating past mistakes, strict environmental management will be essential from the outset.

If Ramaco can navigate both the technical and ecological challenges, this Wyoming discovery could mark the start of a new era—one where America is no longer dependent on foreign sources for the materials powering its future. And in an increasingly competitive global tech landscape, that shift could redefine the balance of power for decades to come.
