Airbus unveils “Guépard”: the next-gen helicopter set to modernize the French military

Sleek, adaptable, and armed with cutting-edge technology, the new H160M Guépard is being hailed as a game-changer for France’s armed forces. Airbus has officially launched flight tests of this multi-role military helicopter, marking a major milestone in a programme that will see the Guépard replace a patchwork of ageing aircraft across all three French services.

A unified platform for the Army, Navy and Air Force

The Guépard is the militarised version of the H160, a civilian helicopter already in service worldwide. By adapting this proven design, Airbus aims to deliver a single platform capable of replacing five different models currently used by the French military: the Gazelle, Alouette III, Dauphin, Panther and Fennec.

Equipped with the comfort and low noise levels of its civilian counterpart—50% quieter than older models—the Guépard offers the French armed forces a versatile airframe that will simplify maintenance, reduce operating costs, and improve interoperability. A total of 169 aircraft have been ordered, with deliveries beginning in 2028: 21 for the Army, eight for the Navy, and one for the Air and Space Force.

Designed for modern combat

One of the Guépard’s standout features is its ability to operate in coordination with drones—a first for an Airbus helicopter. This capability reflects lessons learned from recent conflicts, including the war in Ukraine, where unmanned systems have become a decisive element on the battlefield.

To handle diverse missions, the Guépard will be fitted with a 12.7 mm machine gun, guided rocket launchers, and next-generation sensors such as Thales’ AirMaster C radar and Safran’s Euroflir 410 optronic system. These systems will enable operations in degraded conditions, from reconnaissance to combat support.

Overcoming delays and looking to the market

The integration of advanced systems and budgetary pressures has delayed the programme by one to two years, but Airbus is framing the first flight as a strong step forward. “The first flight is a major milestone, but it’s just the beginning,” said Airbus Helicopters CEO Bruno Even. “The conditions are in place to deliver on our commitments.”

Airbus is targeting 50% of the medium-class helicopter market in the short to medium term, challenging Italian rival Leonardo’s current dominance. While the Guépard has yet to secure export orders, Airbus believes that entry into service with the French military will showcase its versatility, reduced operating costs, and advanced technology—making it attractive to potential buyers in Europe, Africa, and beyond.

A symbol of France’s future air capabilities

For now, the Guépard represents more than just a new helicopter—it’s a symbol of a strategic shift toward a unified, multi-mission fleet. With its combination of proven civilian design and military-grade upgrades, the aircraft promises to give France’s armed forces a powerful, flexible tool for the challenges of modern warfare.

If Airbus can meet its targets, the Guépard could not only reshape the French military’s rotary-wing capabilities but also carve out a significant share of the global market.
